As promised, I am sharing with you the discoveries of my trip in Ireland and I am full of surprises!
I’m taking you today to the Aran Islands, a jewel of the Irish west coast. The weather was perfect during my visit, a bright sunny day. I took the Aran Islands Ferries company on my trip. On the way back, the boat passed by the famous Cliffs of Moher.
Located 18 km from the Irish west coast, on the Galway Bay side (45 minutes crossing), the Aran Islands (Oileáin Árann in Gaelic) are a group of 3 islands in Ireland, internationally known for their typical wild oceanic beauty! These islands are the cradle of a strong history, between archaeological remains, ancestral traditions and unique landscapes.
From Galway, the boat takes you to the main island (Inishmore) which you can explore on foot, by bike or in a carriage. The village of Kilronan (Cill Rónáin) is the main port and starting point to the different sites. There are several points not to be missed: Dún Dúchathair (prehistoric fort), the Worm Hole (also called “Serpent’s Lair”) which is a natural pool, perfectly rectangular, dug in the rock. But also the Dun Aengus fort (prehistoric fort built on a steep cliff), the Cliffs of Aran (extremely impressive cliffs) and many others…
Don’t forget to stop at one of the most beautiful beaches in Inis Mór, Kilmurvey beach. With its fine sand and water of various shades of blue, it will make you want to swim there! There is also another beach where you can have the chance to observe seals languishing in the sun.
It is difficult to do the whole tour of the island in one day because it is full of natural and cultural jewels. The other two islands are also beautiful and worth a visit.
Small geological point: the island is mainly made of karst limestone, related to the Burren Co. Clare in the east and not the Connemara granites in the north.
